BOOMER JOB SEARCH SECRET #1

THE KEY TO A SUCCESSFUL CAREER BOOST AT ANY AGE

IS KNOWING HOW MOST BOOMERS AND BEGINNERS BLOW IT!

If you have just posted your resume to a Job Search Engine, whether you uploaded to one site or a dozen…STOP! JUST STOP!

F.Y.I.:

  • BEFORE you sit back with fingers crossed, like the rest of your fellow seekers and congratulate yourself for taking action, you’re not done yet.
  • BEFORE you begin refreshing your email and looking for invitations to interview, it is now time for the real search to begin. It’s time for main event for all serious Dream Job Seekers.
  • This is where your A-Game, your real plan A will set you apart from everyone else in job search mode. While they will eventually find “A” job, you will discover choices to select your DREAM JOB. Big difference!
  • While your competition or rather your fellow seekers are content to wait for the luck of the draw in the SEARCH ENGINE LOTO, you, my friend, have places to go and employers to meet. It’s  absolutely time for you to step up, to stand out from the crowd. So, let’s continue this conversation, by beginning with the basic difference between the your laser focused success and everyone else’s shotgun style search.

BEING YOUR BEST, NOT LIKE THE REST

It can’t be emphasized enough that the old standard search process and the formats in resumes from your former searches don’t meet today’s standards. Those carbon copy documents that were intended to be snail-mailed or hand delivered to prospective employers are obsolete and ineffective. They worked poorly in the past and are virtually useless in a modern, virtual  cyber-search.

The good news, as I will continue to remind you, in future posts, is that most of your fellow seekers will simply dust off and update an old resume or have a neighbor craft one. They won’t even consider the error in logic and remember that the old dusty resume probably had something to do with them landing the previous job that they hated, lost or simply left.

It deserves repeating, according to Tony Robbins, Albert Einstein, Henry Ford and even Mark Twain, each noted:

IF YOU DO WHAT YOU’VE ALWAYS DONE,

YOU WILL CONTINUE TO GET WHAT YOU’VE ALWAYS GOTTEN!

So, let’s make some changes for the better, by continuing to dig in to design your Dream Search.

THEY’RE FINISHED BEFORE THEY BEGIN

You can take great comfort in knowing that the competition that you imagined and possibly dreaded, yesterday, has been greatly diminished. For reasons that escape logic, the majority of the players in this game of personal advancement have already left the game.

They posted to a search engine, hit ENTER on their computer and sat back to wait for results. Poor planning, but their failure to really launch a search will be a major benefit in your search results. BOOM THAT!

Their best shot at a search is to sit with fingers crossed, waiting for the phone to ring. Their master strategy is to wait for as long as it takes to receive an invitation to interview from an unknown  prospective employer for some job, somewhere. They’ve taken a seat on the bench, called it a day and they assume that they’ve done their best.

Sadly for many, this minimal effort may be a simple smoke screen to convince themselves or a significant other that THEY TRIED. For many, it may actually be easier and more comfortable to avoid a search for the unknown opportunity. By reminding themselves and others that they tried, they may feel less pressure to look for something better. I get it.

HERE’S A BETTER IMAGE

Picture yourself in a group of one hundred sprinters at the starting line of a 440 yard dash.  The starting pistol goes off with a BLAM! Now imagine that 97, 98 or possibly even 99 of your fellow racers stand up, look around at the crowd and walk together over to the bleachers to sit down and wait to hear how the race turned out.

Does that make any sense, whatsoever? Well, Boomer, that describes the popular process of using a Search Engine as the only plan. Most seekers have a Plan A, as step one, with no step 2 even considered. Don’t be surprised or distracted by the fact that you are leaving the crowd in a cloud of your dust. While you keep your eye on the prize, they won’t even notice that you have rounded the first turn and are well out of sight.

Flash forward to the finish line in this example. Can you imagine the spectators that  are waiting to see who crosses the line first. I’m picturing a crowd of eager employers, with job openings, all cheering for and hoping to shake hands with the best of the best. That would be you.

You can be certain, that once they see your stuff, they would be foolish to stop and say, “Wait, let’s go back and see who sat down and failed to compete.” Employers are smarter than that. They will be looking for an exceptional candidate that has managed to drive themselves to the finish line (the Boss’ office), not someone who is sitting on a bench, waiting for a ride. THINK ABOUT IT!

WHAT THEY DON’T KNOW WILL HELP YOU

Now with the odds greatly increased in your favor, you can concentrate on the real game changing steps in your plan.  Plan A for the crowd was just a warm up lap for you.  Now you can shift gears into overdrive and work in a space where there is plenty of room to move around and no one in your way.

The purpose of this post is to give you a reason to step up your game, as we continue this conversation. I hope you see the outstanding possibilities that await you.  While there are thousands of seekers interested in your Dream Job, they won’t know how to create the presentation that will get them discovered.

As we dive deeper into this conversation it’s all about your DREAM JOB and a CAREER BOOST at any age. I’ll remind you that after helping others in the process for many years, I recently decided to boost my own career, one more time at the age of 64 ½.

I’ll also remind you that I was able to identify three dream employers, receive three invitations to interview and three job offers. In addition, with taking Social Security as a very real option and my 65th birthday staring me in the face, I chose an assignment with an award winning company that values my life and career experiences.

They hired me on the spot, doubling my income, while offering me many years of growth opportunity.  I’m having a blast as the member of an amazing team and by the way, I will absolutely continue to work and take 100% of my Social Security benefit (with no penalties) at the age of 66 ½.  I want you to discover the same opportunities.

Your dream job is real and your future Boss would love to meet you.  Let’s do everyone a favor (well, not your competition) and make that introduction possible. BOOM!

  1. That’s exactly what I’m doing, one-click apply, sit back and wait for my dream job to fall in my lap. Thank you Dave, you’ve given me hope and I can’t wait to hear more.

    1. Lisa, that’s actually the good news. It’s safe to say that 90%, if not more of your fellow seekers stop at the post and cross fingers step. It’s so easy to stand out in that crowd, since most are done with their searches. We will be talking about the rest of the steps in upcoming posts and the podcast. Time to stand out!
